What Schools are the Best Schools?

Posted on | October 29, 2008 | No Comments

I get asked a lot by clients who are relocating what the best areas are, what the best schools are, etc.  While I always want to help my clients find the best fit for them, there are some ethical considerations.  For starters, I am not allowed to direct people towards or away from any area or school.  I can lose my license for doing that, as it could be viewed as discrimination.  Secondly, these are subjective things.  People have different criteria for determining “best”.  What I consider to be the best area or school may not be the best for my client and their situation.  They could find themselves in a place that I recommended, and decide they do not think, after all, that it is the “best”.  A lawsuit could ensue and I would probably lose it, and my real estate license.  So, if you ever feel like your Realtor is being vague in answering those kinds of questions, that is why.

What I can (and do) do to help is direct my clients to resources that can give them the information they are looking for.  I have a program that I can enter zip codes into, and compare several different areas to one another.  It has objective information, such as Census Statistics.  I am allowed to pass those on, because they are facts, not opinions.  If you would like me to compare any of our areas to your area, please let me know- I just need to know where you are considering a move to, and the zip code where you live now.  I can email the report to you, usually the same day.

A great website for schools is www.greatschools.net.  You can compare area schools to the schools in your area, in terms of demographics, test scores, student to teacher ratios, curriculum, sports, etc.  To compare cities and town yourself, you can find another good resource here.
