Charleston Weekend (Beach Time)

Charleston SC BeachesAs I write this I am holding an open house at Midtown of Charleston. I’ve had several groups of people through here today, but I think most people are at the beach, not out looking at real estate. That is certainly where I would be.

I think most people downtown probably go to Folly Beach, as that is the younger, “party” beach. I personally would select Sullivan’s Island because that is the beach I grew up on, and I have a sentimental attachment. Jeff, however, would definitely go for Isle of Palms, and I do have to say that it is probably the nicest beach around. Folly is a narrow beach, and Sullivan’s beach gets a little stagnant, due to the extra sand being deposited there. It has created huge extra sand bars, and the gullies in between don’t get much flow, and are as still as a lake. In the summer, they sort of feel like bathwater. Isle of Palms has wide beaches, and often there are waves large enough to surf with a longboard. Our friends in McClellanville go to the beach by boat, out to a barrier island that nobody lives on; it is a wildlife preserve. That is a lot of fun, but, again, when we go to the beach out there, we go to the back side of the island, and there are no waves, and the water is still. It gets so hot here in the summer that it can be a little unbearable to just lie there on the sand. We like beach activities, like surfing, bocci, frisbee, etc. So, we usually end up going to Isle of Palms so that we can surf. Although it is pretty warm today (around 85) and perfectly sunny, I think the water might still be a bit chilly for my tastes. I’m sure people are swimming, though. I guess it just depends on what you are used to.

I love this time of year in Charleston. There’s always so much to do. Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto are coming up, and that is always a ton of fun. For info on great Charleston events, visit this website.

Hi Carrie! We spent Sunday with the family out at Beachwalker Park on the south end of Kiawah Island. Beachwalker has a line of offshore sandbars that sap swell energy, so there weren’t waves to speak of. We brought Ellie’s vintage twin fish and my (your?) funshape and paddled around a bit, the water wasn’t bad at all. If we get some waves and want to do a Dawn Patrol at Isle of Palms, I’ll probably wear a rashguard to cut the wind… See you soon! BBEO&J
